Employee Communication Training

As a leader in your organization, you understand the importance of developing talent. You know that for your company to grow, your employees must be constantly learning, adapting and growing as well.

So, what’s the best investment you can make in your employee training? The top Fortune 500 companies are zeroing in on how they can hone their employees’ communication skills. This is because leaders like you understand how integral good communication is to your organization’s success.

FACT: The company with the best internal and external communication will invariably outperform their competition. This is why Fortune 500 Companies are constantly experimenting with new communication techniques and modalities:

After studying and interviewing leaders in forward-thinking, successful organizations, one trend became jarringly clear – they all are investing in strengthening their employees’ communications skills (including their executives, and especially their employees on an executive track.

From rewiring their teams’ learning style, to enhancing their sophistication and clarity in day-to-day interactions, strong verbal and written communication skills have been elevated from a nice-to-have to a critical trait in all employees.

Corporate Communication Styles are Shifting to Accelerate technical skill growth and inject overall efficiency into the entire organization

Precise Communications are Paramount to Effective Meetings.

Arming the people leading AND those attending meetings with an executive-level vocabulary will inject precision and clarity to all meetings held at all levels.

CNBC… “There are many reasons why meetings go poorly, but frequently it is because of a lack of clarity about the topic or the level at which things are being discussed”

Additionally, some of the deepest research conducted into ‘executive presence’ has cemented the importance of rich, precise vocabulary in the growing of business leaders.

Chat should NOT be the primary form of communication

Short form / chat / shallow communication is no longer considered effective in a healthy, profitable workplace. Recently, organizational productivity experts Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson (Basecamp) began encouraging companies to shift to a more thoughtful communication style.

“All sorts of eventual bad happens when a company begins thinking one-line-at-a-time most of the time. We’ve also seen strong evidence that the method and manner in which you choose to communicate has a major influence on how people feel at work. Frazzled, exhausted, and anxious? Or calm, cool, and collected? These aren’t just states of mind, they are conditions caused by the kinds of tools we use, and the kinds of behaviors those tools encourage.”

Well written (and well spoken) employees strengthen your team

Preparing well-written memos trumps sloppy slide decks every time. Amazon’s been doing it for years with their infamous 6-pagers.

“…writing a good six-page evidence-based narrative is hard work. Precision counts and it can be hard to summarize a complex business in 6 pages, so teams work for hours preparing the document for these reviews. But that preparation does two things. First, it requires the team writing the document to really deeply understand their own space, gather their data, understand their operating tenets and be able to communicate them clearly. The second thing it does is… enables our senior executives to internalize a whole new space they may not be familiar within 30 minutes of reading … greatly optimizing how quickly and how many different initiatives these leaders can review.”

Vocabulary sits at the heart of all these new communication paradigms and methodologies

All of these new communication paradigms and methodologies depend on your employees having the requisite vocabulary to articulate their ideas more succinctly and with greater clarity. Seems simple enough in theory, but is much more difficult in practice.

In order for your employees to be able to communicate with greater precision they need a bigger selection of words in their active vocabulary. They need more words at the front of their brain, so they choose the right word at the right time to clearly articulate their ideas.

This is where Vocabulary Zone Comes in…

Vocabulary is the Core of Your Team’s Business Acumen

Business Acumen is developed via experience and education. Unfortunately, even if employees took a crack at the CEO’s recommended reading list for your industry, their malformed reading comprehension will slow the intake and likely eliminate the retention of the material.

Vocabulary & Reading Comprehension …
Where Soft Skills Meet Hard Skills

Reading comprehension is an extension of vocabulary comprehension. The more words you know, the easier you read, the quicker you digest the material, and the longer you retain the new knowledge. It really is that simple.

The Inextricable Link Between Vocabulary and Reading

Vocabulary and Mental Acuity

Neuroscientists have found that there is a direct link between vocabulary and brain function.

This means that when your employees take steps to improve and expand their vocabulary, they will instantly become smarter. Other studies have augmented this assertion with evidence of vocabulary being an essential ingredient to executive presence.

With each word they learn, they create connections and synapses in their brain. The more connections they create, the better their minds become at critical thinking and problem solving. They will also become more analytical, creative and innovative with their thoughts and ideas.

Transform Your Silo’d Employees Into a
Super-Powered Brain Trust

Building and strengthening vocabulary has increased the intelligence, confidence and aptitude of modern humans for as long as we’ve been able to accurately measure them (more on that here, here, here and here).

“Greater thinking capacity isn’t just desirable — it’s essential. It’s the one resource most organizations can’t hire enough of.”

Your employees make up the company’s brain trust. Building and expanding their vocabulary enhances their mental acuity and cognitive function — all of their brains will work better, faster. They will become more adept at problem solving, critical thinking, and they will be more creative and innovative. Additionally, their physical presence and poise will naturally improve as well, which is especially helpful in sales and outward facing departments

Amplify and Underscore the Positive Impact of Your Existing Corporate Training Programs

Vocabulary Zone is not meant to replace all of the training you’re delivering to your employees. Instead, it’s engineered to amplify the effects of the development programs you already have in-place. Specifically, Vocabulary Zone bolsters and integrates directly with your Communications Skills, Executive Presence and Leadership training programs.

The Vocabulary Zone training makes the new knowledge stickier. Empowers employees to spread the new knowledge up and down the hierarchy, across the subcultures, and into their instant recall. And it transforms even entry level data shovelers into competent, confident, poised forces.

Having a big vocabulary does not mean using long words or speaking a lot – that’s a myth.

Communicating well and having a powerful vocabulary is about using just the right word at the right time.

The more precise a person’s vocabulary, the more clearly they will communicate.

If you want your organization to use high clarity and precise words in their communication, your employees are going to have to move words from their passive vocabulary to their active vocabulary.

This is where the Vocabulary Zone System differs from other traditional vocabulary programs. Other vocabulary software and word of the day emails are only designed to improve a person’s passive vocabulary, so they simply understand what words mean when they read or hear them.

Vocabulary Zone is the first training system designed to build and expand your active vocabulary, so you know how to use a word in your written and spoken communication.

Understanding what a word means is helpful, but being able to actively use a new word in your daily communication is significantly more beneficial.

After your employees go through Vocabulary Zone, they’ll pause just before they speak or write, and the perfect word

But this skill has nothing to do with magic.
It’s called being in “The Zone” … The Vocabulary Zone.

The vast majority of your employees have never been properly taught vocabulary. Since there is not a focus on vocabulary in our education system, most people must develop their vocabulary on their own through reading and communicating and interacting with others.

Unfortunately, the average adult does not read enough to adequately build a good vocabulary, which also means that most communication circles do not provide an opportunity to learn new words. This is evident in research that found the average adult only learns 20 new words a year.

Vocabulary Scores Correlate with Corporate Ranking

A Johnson O’Connor Institute Study tested managers at 39 different companies. Vocabulary test scores correlated directly with existing rankings on the corporate ladder. Top executives had the highest average score (236); middle managers were in the middle range (140), and lower managers achieved the lowest average scores (89).

The two core reasons executives outscore their underlings on vocabulary tests is because of their reading habits and their communication circles. Executives are voracious readers. For example, Fortune 500 CEOs read on average 4.5 books a month compared to the average American who reads only one book a year.

Executives also have the benefit of interacting with other executives both professionally and socially. These high-level communication circles enable executives to build on and compound their already robust vocabularies from reading.
